CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Lindsey grumbled all the way home, where escaping into a warm blanket and a good book seemed like the perfect remedy. Jasmine agreed and curled up beside her on the sofa. Lindsey delicately stroked the cat's black, shiny coat.
"On the mend, beautiful lady?" she cooed at Jasmine, who looked at her long enough to bat her long lashes. Lindsey took a sip of chamomile-pineapple teaâit was quickly becoming her new favoriteâand set the cup on the end table next to the sofa.
Lindsey didn't have the space she needed in her head for listening to the tape of the EVP just yet. She'd do it tomorrow once the weather had turned.
Her sitting room was the perfect place to spend cold, uncomfortable days. She'd filled it with everything she needed to soothe her spirits without leaving the couch. She'd needed it so much in those first few months back in Sparrowford.
In the corner, where a Tiffany lamp glowed warm and inviting, an oversized deck of tarot cards caught Lindsey's eye. She'd been gifted them by a friend she'd gone to last year for some spiritual advice, but she'd never taken the time to learn how to use them properly.
"If they even work," Lindsey said to herself. Big if.
She pulled back the blanket and slipped out of the chair. The deck felt light as she shuffled it in the lamp's light. The cards weren't new, but they weren't worn either. No, these had been used just enough to retain some positive energy.
Lindsey shuffled the deck slowly while thinking her question. She paused and spoke quietly, "Who killed Maureen Monrose?"
If she was trying to will the cards to give her a straight answer, it didn't work out that way. She turned the card over to find a traditional portrait of the lovers, limbs intertwined and upside down. Reversed, as seasoned tarot readers might say.
"Tell me something I don't know," she said, and plopped the deck down on the table. Maybe, she thought, I can make a nice bag for them later.
Instead of going back to her book, Lindsey spent the rest of the night searching up tarot information online and brainstorming ways to catch Maureen's killer. It didn't seem to be Michael, but Lucas? He might have hated her if she treated him differently from the rest of the family. Randall seemed smitten, and Annaliese didn't seem strong enough to get the job done. Foss?
Jasmine meowed curtly.
"You don't know how bad city boys really are," Lindsey warned, but she wondered if they could really be worse than the boys here in Sparrowford. Poor Vincent was taking on double the risk.
Suddenly, her bones felt tired. Her shoulders alone could have weighed 300 pounds. Lindsey slinked back to her cushy chair, where a big fluffy blanket waited to envelop her. This had been a long week, and she needed to turn off her phone and just float through to Monday morning. Not in a warm bathâthough that would be on the orderâbut in the peace of one positively pleasant and not-at-all-haunted house.
